Republican Stance

As discussed, Republicans opposed the passage and implementation of the ACA. Republicans in Congress voted over forty times to defund, dismantle, or repeal the law. These votes were mostly symbolic considering Democrats controlled the Senate and the White House at the time. Generally, Republicans focus on five major points for why they believe Obamacare is not the solution to America’s healthcare issue. Their main points are that Obamacare:

• Increased healthcare costs

• Causes insurance premiums to rise

• Diminishes the quality of healthcare

• Added nearly $570 billion in tax hikes

• Adds over $500 Billion to the national debt

In general, Republicans pointed out that the law was too complex and would create future problems for insurance companies; that the law was very expensive and would add a significant amount to the national debt; and would hurt business in America by way of tax hikes and the new obligations for businesses to comply. It’s certainly true that Republicans consistently opposed the ACA. However, it is important to note that Republicans were not against improving America’s healthcare system. A main critique of the Republican stance towards the ACA was the Republicans’ lack of a viable alternative to address healthcare policy in the United States.
